ABOUT
A title sequence based on the book Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé. The book is an intense YA mystery and thriller, and the protagonists and reader are never sure who can truly be trusted.
Given this, I based the title sequence primarily on typography. Typography relates heavily to the book with the anonymous messages and mystery. The story is filled with uncertainty and distrust, and tension builds with every new discovery. Additionally, common strategic games and ideas are used to inspire layouts, such as chess openings.
Symbols and words from the book are used to foreshadow and represent the story, such as: piano (which Devon plays), text messages, car headlights, legal documents, “Aces,” “Just in...” (which is used in most Aces messages), and the school values (such as “nobility” and “excellence”).
Additionally, color and illustrations are used minimally, like title sequences from older 60s spy and horror movies. Colors like black, white, and red fit the tone of the book well and keep the design simple. I also illustrated the hands and spotlights to give an opposing textured element.
